José Ângelo graduated in Civil Engineering from IST – Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisbon, Portugal), and is responsible for the Lisboa-Porto and Porto-Vigo Axis at RAVE, S.A. (Rede Ferroviária de Alta Velocidade), since 2008. José is in charge of the development of the studies concerning the Lisboa-Porto and the Porto-Vigo rail axis for the Portuguese High-Speed Rail Network. He started working for CP (Portuguese Railway Company) in 1973, and participated in several railway projects within the area of track design. Since 1986, he coordinates railway projects at REFER and later on at RAVE.

Renato has over 25 years of executive-level experience in the localization industry. He has served on the executive teams for some of the industry’s most prominent companies, and co-founded the first market research company focusing on the language services space (Common Sense Advisory). He was a member of the San Diego Software Industry Council and Chair of its Global Markets Business Interest Group. He has served as a LISA advisor on its Executive Committee and was a founding member of SINTRA, the Brazilian Translator's Association. A frequent speaker on globalization and localization issues, he has made presentations and keynote speeches at events organized by ATA (American Translators Association), Unicode, Localization World, GALA (Globalization and Localization Association), LISA (Localization Industry Standards Association), IQPC (International Quality and Productivity Center), NYNMA (New York New Media Association), NYSIIA (New York Software Industry Association), IIR (Institute of International Research), SIIA (Software and Information Industry Association), ALC (Association of Language Companies), Federcentri (Italian Association of Translation Companies), ELIA (European Language Industry Association), and, now, at a TRADULÍNGUAS Conference. Renato is currently the Chief Executive Officer of milengo.

Ph.D. in Technical Communication and Translation Usability by the Dublin City University. BA (Hons) in Applied Languages Translation with Interpreting (German/Spanish) by the Dublin City University, 1997. Postgraduate Certificate in Translator Training for Teachers by the Consortium for the Training Translation Teachers and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona, 2001. Jody has worked for over a decade as a translator specialising in technical, medical and legal translation, and teaches translation, localisation and translation technologies at the University of Sheffield (UK). He has published widely on various aspects of translation and translator training and is the author of "Technical Translation: Usability Strategies for Translating Technical Documentation" (Springer, 2006). He is a professional member of the Irish Translator’s & Interpreters’ Association and a Fellow of the Institute of Scientific & Technical Communicators (UK).

Developer and owner of the Wordfast and PlusTools suite of CAT (Computer-Assisted Translation) tools. Yves Champollion was born 1956 in Paris, France; he is related to the famous Aegyptologist Jean François Champollion. He has travelled extensively in the 70s and the 80s both to escape so-called higher studies and to quench his thirst for languages and cultures. Having learned enough languages and traveled enough miles, he met a Japanese girl in London, who turned into his fiancée in Germany, then turned into his wife in New York, until both settled down in Paris. He got into the computing craze of the eighties, produced various pieces of software (such as "Le Tableur Comptable", an iconoclastic spreadsheet designed for accountants), then got into free-lance translation then into programming translation tools such as Wordfast – all for the sheer love and pleasure of it. Hobbies include traveling and learning languages (after French, Latin, German and English taught by the Fathers of Saint Vincent's College, to whom his heartfelt gratitude is hereby expressed, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian were added, as well as some Japanese and, last but not least, Shangana, a Zulu-related language of Southern Mozambique, where he sponsors a secondary school.

DeAnn Cougler is a professional translator and consultant for translation management issues. With a degree in international political science and German from the University of Utah, including studies of German and politics in Heidelberg, she moved to Germany permanently in 1991, first teaching in Mannheim before taking an in-house position as a technical translator in Munich. In the mid-1990s, she began expanding the translation capacities of the technical documentation department through outsourcing and database management (translation memory systems and terminology databases). Moving into project management she coordinated the internal centralization of translation activities within the company. In 2007, DeAnn left office life for a successful career as a freelance translator, editor and consultant. She has spoken on several occasions at European conferences on the benefits of translation databases and other translation and terminology issues.

Jerzy Czopik was born in Cracow, Poland and is living and working in Germany since 1987. He initiated his studies in Mechanical Engineering at the Cracow University of Technology (CUT), which he interrupted due to his moving to Germany, where he got his M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Dortmund. Since 1990, he is a full-time freelance translator, working together with his wife as a proofreader. Due to his technical background, he translates mainly technical materials, manuals or documentation, which are very well suited for the use of CAT tools. His first contact with CATs was Star Transit, which he started to use in the second half of the nineties. Then, his main tool became Trados, which he uses since 2000, and he is now a certified SDL Trados user (all available levels). Jerzy is currently a SDL approved trainer and provide onsite and online trainings on Trados. With his colleague Maciej Andrzejczak, he also organizes training for groups of colleagues in Poland in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Jerzy is a very active ProZ.com member and organizer of two ProZ.com conferences in Dortmund, Germany (2007 and 2009). At many ProZ conferences attended, he spoke about the usage of Word and Trados. Jerzy can be met at several Internet help forums and mailing lists for translators. He is certified according to EN 15038:2008.

Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Systemic Engineering at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology (Universidade Nova de Lisboa), with an extensive research work in cognitive control. Current president of APOCOSIS (Associação Portuguesa de Complexidade Sistémica). 1st Prize for Scientific and Technical Translation awarded by JNICT / Latin Union (1993) for its translation of Microelectronics (Jacob Miltman/Alvin Grabel) into Portuguese. Former president of the Portuguese Electrotechnical Terminology Committee (Portuguese Institute for Quality). Chair of the Organizing Committee of contrapor2006 – 1st Portuguese Translation Conference. Professor Duarte-Ramos is also a member of the Program Committee and a Scientific Advisor for this Conference.

Steve Dyson, BSc, SFT

Steve Dyson was born and educated in Australia and holds a BSc in Physics & Mathematics from Melbourne University (Australia). From 1970 to 2000 he lived mostly in France. Since 2000, he has lived mostly in Portugal, while making regular trips to France and Australia. Since 1995, Steve has specialised in French-to-English translation and technical journalism (in English) for the French naval defence industry. Earlier, he spent ten years specialising in space technology and another ten specialising in satellite-based remote sensing. From 1994 to 2005, he conducted an annual terminology workshop at Université de Toulouse-Le Mirail (DESS translation course). He has lectured on localisation in Portugal and Macau and gives annual presentations on communication skills for engineers at Lisbon's IST (Instituto Superior Técnico) as part of final-year course of product design and development. From 1986 to 2006, he was a member of the U.S.-based STC (Society for Technical Communication) and is currently a member of the SFT (Société française des Traducteurs) and several internet forums for language service professionals. Steve has undertaken consultancy projects on translation methods and related issues for French shipbuilder DCN and French space agency CNES. He has spoken on many occasions at European conferences on translation (including the TRADULÍNGUAS 2007 Conference), terminology, translation methods and related issues.

Mathilde Fontanet

Mathilde Fontanet, born in 1960, is a Swiss translator and reviser of French mother tongue. She has been working in the Translation Service of CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) since 1991, dealing with complex technical texts, and is now head of its French section. Her experience in translating a full range of texts has made her an expert in the specificities of technical translation and its particular demands. In parallel, she has been teaching technical translation at the School of Translation and Interpretation (ETI) of the University of Geneva since 2000. Thus, in addition to a deep understanding of the realities of professional translation and the associated quality requirements, she has excellent insight into the difficulties with which less experienced translators are confronted and an ability to stimulate discussion and put participants at their ease.

Suzanne Goujan, M.A.

Suzanne Goujan is graduated from the French Lycée of London, on a scholarship (20/year granted in France) with an international elite. Though admitted in Paris most renowned "classes prepa" , she decided to study both Japanese and English in the best universities of Paris, and following a couple of years as Japanese journalists assistant (translations and press reviews in Japanese), she graduated in a Master of International Trade. In the meantime, following a selective test, she also collaborated to the launch of the successful international weekly newspaper Courier International, translating regularly newspapers articles about Japanese contemporary society and economy. She also worked as a free lance market researcher for the Japanese Agency of Energy, which notably allowed her to obtain a grant from the Japanese Ministry of Education, to go on her research in Japan, while also working as an executive consultant and interpreter for a leading French group, and French teacher for Japanese executives and teachers. Back to France, she gained an insight of several methods of management and marketing in multinational companies, while keeping up to date her language skills, and collaborated notably to a market survey in English to prepare Sony-Ericsson birth. Now working for several years as a free lance translator interpreter and business consultant, she deals regularly with start of the art themes regarding new technologies, such as renewable energies.

Viviane Grisez, M.A.

Viviane Grisez graduated from the Interpreters' school of Mons, Belgium, where she studied translation techniques in French, English, German and Dutch. As a postgraduate in Language Didactics, she has been teaching English and Dutch at the Faculté Polytechnique de Mons (Faculty of Engineering – Mons University). Since 1986, she has been at the head of the Language Department of the same university. Besides her passion for bilingualism and intercultural aspects of language, she has been involved in many European language programmes in the field of e-learning (text-to-speech technologies, online course content development).

David Hardisty, M.A.

David Hardisty is a Teaching Fellow at the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (FCSH) of the Universidade Nova, here in Lisbon. He teaches Translation Technology courses to undergraduate and postgraduate translation students and also Technical and Scientific Translation (Portuguese to English) to undergraduate students. In the last twenty years, he has co-authored four books on use of educational technology for Oxford University Press. He also carries out translations as a freelance translator. Recent translations have included co-translation of the Portuguese Knowledge Society Agency (UMIC – Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento) website for the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education. He also translated a significant part of the Portuguese Government’s website for its 2007 Presidency of the European Union. He puts his shape down to the proof-eating of the five Portuguese cookery books he has translated.

Graça Jorge, Civ. Eng.

Civil Engineer (specialized on Hydraulics and Water Resources Management). Graça Jorge is the Environment and Territorial Planning Director of RAVE, S.A. (Rede Ferroviária de Alta Velocidade), since 2004, where she leads the studies and environmental procedures for the Portuguese High-Speed Rail Network implementation. Prior to joining RAVE, she was the Hydraulics and Water Resources Management Director of Hidroprojecto, S.A. a specialized consulting company for water management systems and environmental sciences.

Marcela Jenney, B.A., CT (ATA)

Marcela Jenney is a professional cross cultural marketing and business coach and consultant with over 20 years of experience in the translation and localization industry. An ATA-certified English-into-Spanish translator, Marcela has gone through all the various stages of the translation business. For 10 years she worked as a successful freelance translator, then moved into the corporate world to manage the translation and localization department of a worldwide bank, and later founded her own translation and localization company. When her firm was acquired in 2007, she spent the next two years successfully serving as the Director of Sales, Marketing and Communications for the newly merged company. Then in 2009 her reputation for producing the highest quality work and implementing cutting edge strategies and methodologies led her to open Latitudes Training, Coaching and Consulting, a company that helps solo entrepreneurs, small business owners, consultants, executives and professionals from diverse backgrounds create and integrate their unique selling propositions into the U.S. market. In Spring 2010 Marcela will receive her MBA in Marketing, her certification as a Certified Personal Branding Strategist, and her certificate as a Professional Coach.

Mikhail Novikov, Ph.D.

Mikhail Novikov holds a Master's degree from the famous Translation Department of the Institute of Foreign Languages, Moscow, Russia and a Ph.D. in Swiss History from the Academy of Sciences. While working on his second doctorate degree in the U.S., he taught a Sociology course at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the early 1990s. Having spent over 12 years in academic research, consulting and lecturing, he turned his attention to modern computer technologies and business. He was the Publisher of the oldest Russian computer games magazine, Business Development Director at a company that developed, localized and published computer games, education and children software, and later he headed a company that developed learning software for over a hundred languages. Currently, he is Business Development Director at ITI – International Translation & Informatics, a Moscow-based translation and software development company, where he supervises the development of an online terminology management and automated quality assurance technology.

Manuel de Oliveira Barata, L.L.M.

Manuel de Oliveira Barata graduated from the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra (Portugal), and holds a Master's (L.L.M.) in Public International Law and Law of the European Institutions from the University of London, King's College. He worked as a journalist in London, at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) External Services. A European Commission official since 1982, he first worked as a lawyer-linguist in the Legal Service, revising the Portuguese version of the EC treaties prior to Portugal's accession to the EU, then he was seconded as a "référendaire" to the Portuguese Judge's chambers at the Court of Justice and, finally, at the Commission's Directorate-General for Translation, where he occupied a number of management posts over the years. He is currently the Head of the Portuguese Language Department

Dolores Raventós de Castro, M.Sc., CLT

Retired Professor from the Universidad Simón Bolívar (USB) in Caracas, Venezuela, institution in which she participated since its foundation 40 years ago. She now serves as a consultant in its globalization process. She was educated in the United States, Spain and Switzerland; holds both Translator's and Interpreter's Degrees from the University of Geneva and a Master's from Columbia University in Information Systems. She is a certified Legal Translator for the Republic of Venezuela since April 1970. She participated actively in the field of Terminology since 1978, created the Terminology Bank of the USB until her retirement. She collaborated with the National Standards Institute in Technical Committees 37 & 46 until her retirement. She was Coordinator (Dean) of the Graduate Program of Information Studies of the USB where she trained the personnel of the National Library and Information System enter the New Era of Computers and the Internet. She has always been active as a Freelance Translator, experiencing every level of processing, from mechanical typing to the latest mode with computers, while actively generating glossaries and technical manuals for Cement, Petrochemical, Coal Plants, Medical Equipment, among others. She is now incorporating and analyzing the use of CAT programs as tools when generating future technical manuals

André Sá Machado, MLE

Law degree by Universidade Católica, Lisbon, Portugal in 1994, and member of the Portuguese Bar Association. "Magister Legum Europae" (MLE European Legal Practice) by the Universität Hannover (Germany). Completed post-graduate studies in "Energy Law" at Faculdade de Direito de Lisboa in 2009. In-service training (1996-97) at the European Commission, in the Directorate-General XV – Internal Market and Financial Services covering company law, multinationals and European company law. Internships at the World Bank (USA and Paris) on "Procurement Law". Specific courses related to the Oil & Gas industry: "LNG Contracts" (Dubai, UAE), "World Legal Systems & Contracts for Oil & Gas" (London, UK), "The Natural Gas & LNG Industry" (London, UK), "International Energy Law, Contracts, and Negotiations – Upstream Issues and Agreements" (Houston, USA), "Contracts used in International Petroleum Development" at the University of Dundee (Scotland, UK). He is currently the Legal Counsel at Partex Services Portugal, a Portuguese company acting on the Oil & Gas sector worlwide. Steven Sachs, CT (ATA)

Steven is self-employed as free-lance interpreter and translator for French and Portuguese into English since 1979. He is also certified for translation from French into English by the American Translators Association and has served as a grader for the association's certification program (French into English) since 2004. Voting member, American Translators Association and member of ATA's French Language Division. Member of the American Association of Language Specialists (TAALS). He is a former member of the board of directors of the American Translators Association and a former member of the board and past vice-president of the International Federation of Translators (FIT).

Karen McMillan Tkaczyk, Ph.D.

Karen has been a freelance technical translator since only 2005, but quickly established a highly-specialized, successful technical translation practice. She is originally from the UK, now based in Nevada, USA. She is active in the ATA and the ITI, and certified by the ATA for French into English translation. Karen is the current president of her regional association, NITA – Nevada Interpreters and Translators Association. Her translation work focuses on chemistry, its industrial applications, and chemical intellectual property. Before becoming a translator, Karen earned a Masters in Chemistry with French from the University of Manchester, UK, and a PhD Chemistry and a Diploma in French from the University of Cambridge, UK. She has industrial experience in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries in France, the UK, Ireland and the US. Karen uses the knowledge obtained during these years of laboratory and manufacturing experience to give presentations designed to provide translators with a more grounded, practical understanding of the technical documents they translate and the terminology used in these industries.

Francisco Miguel Valada, MA

Francisco Miguel Valada (born in Oporto, Portugal in 1972) holds an undergraduate degree in Translation from the School of Technology and Management – Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (ESTG-IPL), and a European Masters in Conference Interpreting from the University of Minho (Portugal). He was an Assistant Professor at ESTG-IPL. Currently living in Brussels, Valada has been a professional interpreter since 2002. He worked for three years as an in-house Portuguese interpreter at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, and currently works as a freelance interpreter at the institutions of the European Union. He has given talks on selected topics such as Conference Interpreting, Orthography and Linguistics. He has published a number of articles in the press and is the author of the book Demanda, Deriva, Desastre – os três dês do Acordo Ortográfico.
